If you have been charged with a criminal offence, this means that the Police think there is sufficient evidence to gain a conviction against you in Court.

Proceedings can start in two ways – either by charge where you are in the Police Station and are formally told what the allegation is against you and you are given a date to go to Court or for less serious offences by Summons stating the nature of the allegation and the date you are to go to Court.

Offences fall into three categories:-

  1. Those that can only be dealt with in the Magistrates Courts - these are minor matters including most motoring offences, being drunk and disorderly and minor breaches of the peace.
  2. Offences that can be dealt with either in the Magistrates Court or the Crown Court - this includes the majority of offences in this Country including theft, burglary and minor assaults.
  3. Cases that can only dealt with in the Crown Court - this includes serious offences such as murder and rape.

We can provide advice and assistance in connection with most criminal matters, from attending with you at the Police Station for interview through to representing you at Court.
